Counseling Suite

Greetings,

My name is Karen Mays-Terry and am one of the Caring Counselors at the awesome Bertha Sadler Means Young Women’s Leadership Academy. Our school is so special and I appreciate being a part of it.

My journey as an educator started 30 years ago at Mendez Middle School in Austin, TX. I taught Special Education, Language Arts and World Cultures. Later, I followed my heart to Pecan Springs Elementary School. My educational assignment was teaching 3rd and 5th graders. While there, I was recruited and accepted the assignment to teach at Bertha Sadler Means Young Leadership Academy. The 3 years spent during my teaching assignment allowed me to be a House Leader, Culture Club Sponsor and Heritage Assembly coordinator. One of my proudest moments was being recognized and selected as our school’s 2nd “Teacher of the Year. Upon finishing my Counselors Certification, I enjoyed working 2 years at Decker Middle School in Manor, TX. I was able to learn and grow as a counselor working with a wonderful student body and staff.

I accepted the call to return to Bertha Sadler Means as a Counselor in 2019. While here, I enjoy the unique opportunity to assist “Young Leaders” develop their skills for success in their future. We provide leadership training and guidance counseling, career exploration as well as make referrals to outside agencies. We host and plan celebrations, guest speakers and coordinate Career Days for our “Young Leaders”.

We work closely with teachers, administrators and others to provide the best services and learning experiences for our girls. In my spare time away from school, I am an avid reader of all types of literary genre. I enjoy working with my sorority Alpha Kappa Alpha Incorporated. I am the mother of one daughter Allyson who is also an educator and a grandmother of Aaryn.

I consider it a privilege to be a part of a wonderful learning adventure!
