Mission

Bertha Sadler Means Young Women's Leadership Academy is dedicated to academic excellence in the sciences and arts (STEAM) and fostering the intellectual, creative, ethical, and leadership development of its students.  Sadler Means will develop the whole child through socioemotional learning and culturally responsive experiences to inspire school and self pride while empowering a commitment to positive social change, in our community and beyond.

Vision

Bertha Sadler Means Young Women's Leadership Academy will foster a sisterhood environment to develop confident, academically prepared, service-minded and innovative young women leaders for success in college, career, and life.

Overview

Bertha Sadler Means Young Women's Leadership Academy is a tuition-free, all-girls academy located in northeast Austin, close to downtown. We offer young women the opportunity to nurture their academic, creative and athletic interests while developing leadership and collaboration skills in a safe and inclusive educational environment.

With more than 200 years of collective professional experience, our highly-qualified certified teachers support student achievement and provide opportunities for all of our students.

We are a member of both the LBJ and Northeast Early College High School families, setting our students on a path to be able to graduate high school with both their high school diploma and an associate degree.

History

About Bertha Sadler Means

Our namesake, Bertha Sadler Means, is an inspiration to every student and staff member, and a central part of our community at Sadler Means Young Women's Leadership Academy.

A true hero of the city of Austin, she is known for her work as a businesswoman, educator and civil rights activist.

Ms. Sadler Means held several positions within Austin Independent School District over the course of her career, in both elementary and secondary education, and she was a pioneer in reading education. She taught at Prairie View A&M College and at the University of Texas at Austin, as well as delivering workshops in teacher education at Huston Tillotson University.
