AVID

Sadler Means YWLA is proud to be an AVID (Advancement Via Individual Determination) role model school.

AVID (Advancement Via Individual Determination) is a year-long, college preparatory course designed to build the skills necessary for students to successfully graduate from a 4–year university or college. The course emphasizes writing, inquiry, collaboration, organization and reading.

In addition to building skills in all content areas, students enrolled in the AVID course will take part in educational field trips and team building activities. For further support, all students will take part in tutoring sessions during the AVID class time.

You will find the AVID classroom to be active, engaged, supportive and challenging. We build skills through positive reinforcement, group work and student-led learning. The classroom is open to mistakes, because this is when true learning happens. We approach all learning with a growth mindset, understanding that goals can be met with hard work and support.

How does AVID help students?

  • Teaches skills and behaviors for academic success
  • Provides intensive support with tutorials and strong student-teacher relationships
  • Creates a positive peer group for students
  • Develops hope for personal achievement through hard work and determination
